Mohegan Sun’s 10th annual Sun Whiskey Union: A night worth savoring

Some events you attend once and forget by morning. Sun Whiskey Union at Mohegan Sun is not one of them.

Now in its 10th year, the annual celebration brought together over 66 whiskey vendors – many of them right here from Connecticut – for an evening that felt less like a tasting event and more like a gathering of people who genuinely love what’s in their glass. My friend Shane and I made the trip out, and neither of us left disappointed.

Walking in, the energy hit you immediately. The room was packed with hundreds of attendees, tables stretching as far as you could see, each one manned by someone eager to talk about what they were pouring. For a moment, Shane and I just stood there taking it all in – 66 vendors is no small thing, and figuring out where to even begin felt a little overwhelming. We did what made sense: made a full lap around the room first, scoping everything out before committing to a single pour.

It was the right call.

After getting the lay of the land, one table pulled us in before any other – Thirteenth Colony Distillery. Honestly, it was the bottle that stopped us. The shape was unlike anything else on the table, distinctive enough that it stood out even in a room full of options. Sometimes that’s all it takes. We stepped up, tried a pour, and just like that, the night had officially begun.

From there it was a natural flow – working our way through the room, sampling what caught our attention, chatting with the people behind the tables. And it wasn’t just straight pours either – some of the vendor tables were serving cocktails, which added a nice dimension to the experience. It gave you a chance to see how certain whiskeys performed when mixed, not just sipped neat, and more than a few of those cocktails were genuinely impressive.

What struck me most throughout wasn’t just the whiskey – it was the conversations. Strangers swapping opinions on mash bills, debating age statements, recommending pours to people they’d met thirty seconds ago. That’sthe kind of crowd this event draws, and it made the whole experience feel more like a community than a sales floor.

The highlight of the night came courtesy of Phil Wills, the fan-favorite bartender from Bar Rescue, who took the stage and walked the crowd through a live demonstration of his brown butter old fashioned. Watching it come together in front of a live audience was something else – part cocktail craft, part showmanship, all impressive. The crowd loved every second of it, and it gave the evening a genuine centerpiece moment that set it apart from your average tasting event.

On the whiskey side, there was no shortage of standouts. Hibiki Suntory brought its signature Japanese elegance – delicate, refined, and a little unexpected in the best way. Maker’s Mark 46 French Oaked reminded everyone why finishing matters, with that extra layer of complexity the standard label doesn’t quite reach. Woodford Reserve Double Oaked delivered the rich, layered depth it’s become known for. And Jefferson’s Ocean Aged at Sea is a conversation starter in a glass – the idea of whiskey aging on a ship at sea sounds like a gimmick until you actually taste it.

But my personal favorite of the night was Michter’s Kentucky Straight Bourbon. Smooth, balanced, and the kind of pour that makes you slow down and actually pay attention to what you’re drinking. In a room full of great whiskey, it was the one I kept coming back to in my head long after I’d moved on to the next table. If you’ve never tried it, the Sun Whiskey Union is the perfect place to find out what you’ve been missing.

Food was handled by Archie Moore’s, and they more than held their own in a room full of heavy hitters. Al pastor pork belly tacos, bourbon glazed grilled chicken sliders, and their famous buffalo chicken dip gave people something to anchor the night between pours. It was the kind of food that pairs well with whiskey without trying to compete with it – exactly what an event like this needs.

Backing all of it was live classic rock echoing through the venue, keeping the energy up without ever feeling intrusive. The music, the crowd, the clinking glasses – it all added up to something that felt genuinely celebratory. Not manufactured, not corporate. Just a room full of people having a great time over great whiskey.

And because this is Mohegan Sun, the night didn’t have to end when the last pour was finished. Shane and I capped the evening the way any good night at a casino should end – at the poker tables. There’s something fitting about settling into a card game after a few hours of great whiskey and good conversation. It was the perfect way to let the night wind down on its own terms.

Ten years in, the Sun Whiskey Union has clearly found its footing. It’s grown into something that feels like a tradition worth keeping – the kind of event where you show up not knowing exactly what you’ll discover, and leave already looking forward to next year. Shane and I will definitely be back.

If you missed it this year, do yourself a favor and put it on your calendar now. Your glass will thank you.
