Mohegan Sun Arena to close mid-December through mid-February for $30 million transformation

Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville is beginning a multi-phase, $30 million renovation after 25 years of live entertainment. The project covers the 10,000-seat venue’s seating, food and beverage outlets, concourse, entrances and premium hospitality spaces. It was developed with SCI Architects.

Most construction will happen alongside the Arena’s regular event schedule. The venue will close temporarily from Dec. 15 through mid-February to complete key elements of the work. It is set to reopen Sunday, Feb. 28, with a performance by Breaking Benjamin and special guests Starset, P.O.D. and Filter.

Tickets for the Feb. 28 show go on sale Friday, Nov. 6, through Ticketmaster. The Mohegan Sun Box Office will begin selling tickets the following day at noon, subject to availability.

Work during the closure includes a complete arena-wide seating replacement and all-new lighting, finishes, and flooring throughout the concourse level. The first phase of modernized concessions will feature new LED screens and upgraded kitchens. The first phase of restroom updates will bring refreshed finishes, updated fixtures, improved lighting, and enhanced accessibility.

The main entrance near Comix Roadhouse and the entrance in Casino of the Sky will each receive 25-foot-wide LED screens above the doors and inside the vestibules. Halo LED screens will also be added throughout both entrances. Digital displays in the lower bowl will be upgraded, and the project includes elevator upgrades and electrical enhancements.

The current beer garden outlets will become Marketplace concepts with more than 30 taps of beer and craft cocktails, plus a new grill and full kitchen. One Marketplace in the north end of the Arena will use Amazon’s “Just Walk Out” technology for faster transactions and shorter waits. In 2027, a VIP lounge of nearly 4,000 square feet connected to the Casino of the Sky entrance will be built. It will hold up to 150 guests and include a full bar.

“For 25 years, Mohegan Sun Arena has set the standard for live entertainment in the Northeast,” said Joe Soper, VP of Sports & Entertainment for Mohegan. He said the Arena has hosted more than 4,250 performances and welcomed nearly 18 million guests since 2001. “The goal is simple: to create a more immersive, comfortable and thrilling venue for fans as well as our artists and promoters.”

After Breaking Benjamin, the Arena’s calendar includes the Red Clay Strays on March 18, Death Cab for Cutie on April 9, Matt Mathews on April 10, A Perfect Circle on April 28, Tom Segura on April 30, Papa Roach on May 22, Def Leppard and Goo Goo Dolls on June 25, and Greta Van Fleet on July 24.

Jeff Hamilton, president and general manager of Mohegan Sun, said the investment reflects a commitment to “continually evolving to meet the expectations of guests.” Mohegan Sun will also begin a $22 million renovation of Earth Tower next summer, with more details to be announced later.

The Arena opened in the fall of 2001 with a preseason game between the Boston Celtics and the Washington Wizards. It has hosted performers including Bruce Springsteen, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and Bruno Mars, along with WWE, college basketball, MMA and boxing events. Its honors include multiple Academy of Country Music “Arena of the Year” awards and a No. 1 indoor arena ranking from Pollstar for its size.
