Mark Twain House & Museum announces new Executive Director

The Mark Twain House & Museum (351 Farmington Avenue, Hartford, Connecticut) named Jeffrey L. Nichols its next Executive Director.

For the past four years, Nichols has served as CEO of the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, PA. There, he was responsible for managing one of the largest museums in the country dedicated to telling the full story of the American Civil War. Nichols’ resume also includes leading Georgetown Heritage and Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest. Nichols’ appointment is the result of a national search. He succeeds Pieter Roos who retired in November, 2023.

This marks a homecoming of sorts for Nichols; he served as Executive Director of the Twain House from 2008-2012. During that time, he stepped into the role from the staff ranks and led the organization admirably during a time of transition.

“We are very fortunate that Jeff Nichols will be leading The Mark Twain House & Museum,” said Hans Miller, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “His extensive experience in historic site and museum management, combined with his deep appreciation for Mark Twain and understanding of this organization, brings us a dynamic leader who can build on our past success.”

Incoming Executive Director Jeffrey Nichols said, “I am honored to return to Mark Twain’s Hartford home. I look forward to working with the dedicated board and staff to continue sharing the enduring legacy of Mark Twain, and to build upon the important work they have accomplished.”

The Mark Twain House & Museum marked its 150th year in 2024. Its honors include National Geographic’s “Best Historic House Tour In America” and Conde Nast’s “Best Museum in Connecticut.” Approximately 50-thousand people visit every year from all over the world, with increasing student outreach, ensuring the next generation learns about this iconic American writer.
