Mark Hummel, a renowned blues artist, grew up in Los Angeles after being born in New Haven, Connecticut. He developed a passion for blues harp and rock-blues music, which is still evident today in his musical style. While in high school was digging deep, discovering the originators of the music he loved – Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, and Little Walter, just to name a few. Hummel began frequenting the renowned Ash Grove on Melrose Avenue in LA where he saw a slew of blues pioneers including Charlie Musselwhite, James Cotton, and Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee – artists whom he would later end up working with on a regular basis! By the mid ‘eighties, his band The Blues Survivors hit the road and never looked back…. Hummel has also been at the helm of his Blues Harmonica Blowout, now in its 32nd year. This supergroup has presented a who’s who of harmonica virtuosos including Charlie Musselwhite, Magic Dick, RJ Mischo, Rick Estrin, James Cotton, Lazy Lester, Billy Boy Arnold, James Harman, Jason Ricci, Sam Myers, and Bobby Rush. And that is just a handful of blues luminaries that have been a part of this amazing musical venture. Another one of Hummel’s projects is the Golden State Lone Star Revue, an all-star melding of musicians from California and Texas, where he joined forces with guitar slinger Anson Funderburgh.
Born and raised in Texas, and still residing in his hometown of Plano, Anson Funderburgh got his first guitar when he was around nine years old. His mother worked at a local school and bought it from a lady she worked with. Accompanying the guitar was a box of 45s-Jimmy Reed, Albert Collins, Freddie King, Wilbert Harrison, Ray Sharpe…. The path was set and Funderburgh became a professional musician at age 15. In 1978 he formed his band The Rockets with harmonica player and vocalist Darrell Nulisch, who left the group in 1986. Sam Myers replaced Nulisch that year and the rest is history. Their longstanding musical partnership them brought both international acclaim. For 20 years The Rockets, along with Myers, toured continuously all over the world and went on to win ten Blues Music Awards from the Blues Foundation in Memphis, Tennessee. Myers succumbed to cancer in 2006, and Funderburgh took some time off from non-stop touring. Anson continues to play with The Rockets and is in high demand as a featured guest guitar player and producer. His unmistakable style, tone and sensibility has made him one of contemporary blues music’s most important guitar players. Funderburgh has developed into a legacy artist and his influence on countless guitarists is immeasurable.
