Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk offers winter seal-spotting, birding cruises

This winter, adventure awaits just off our shores. The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk invites visitors to embark on its Seal-Spotting and Birding Cruises, beginning Jan. 10 and offered most weekends through March.

These two-hour cruises aboard the R/V Sound Explorer offer a rare opportunity to witness the seasonal wildlife that calls Long Island Sound home during the colder months. Guests will journey through the Norwalk Islands in search of harbor and gray seals hauled out on the many low-lying rocks scattered among the islands. Aquarium educators will share insights into these federally protected marine mammals and help identify waterfowl such as buffleheads, mergansers, long-tailed ducks, and loons.

“People are always amazed to learn that seals and these incredible birds are right here in our backyard,” said Captain Nicki Rosenfeld, director of vessel operations and programs at the Maritime Aquarium. “It’s like a winter safari on the Sound — an unforgettable experience to see these animals in their natural environment.”

The cruises are ideal for nature lovers, birders, photographers, and anyone curious about the seasonal rhythms of Long Island Sound. Binoculars are provided, though guests are welcome to bring their own, as well as cameras to capture the unforgettable sights.

Cruise schedules follow the low tides, so departure times change from weekend to weekend. For schedules and tickets, visit maritimeaquarium.org/events. Tickets cost $49.95; $44.95 for members. Cruises depart from the Maritime Aquarium’s dock at 90 Water Street, a seven- to 10-minute walk from the aquarium’s main entrance.
