Litchfield Arts Council to host free events for National Poetry Month

The Litchfield Arts Council has partnered with local community organizations to sponsor two free public events in celebration of National Poetry Month this April.

The festivities include an interactive workshop at the Litchfield Historical Society and a showcase featuring several Connecticut poets laureate at the Litchfield Community Center.

The first event, an ekphrastic poetry workshop, will take place Sunday, April 26, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Litchfield Historical Society, 7 South St. Led by Sandy Carlson, Woodbury’s poet laureate emerita, the session focuses on ekphrasis — the tradition of writing poetry inspired by art.

Participants of all ages will create poems based on the museum’s historical objects and art. The Litchfield Arts Council and Orenaug Mountain Publishing will compile the works into a commemorative chapbook. Those interested in attending can reserve a space by emailing ThomasinaLevy@gmail.com.

The celebration concludes with a poetry showcase titled “The Poets Among Us” on Thursday, April 30, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Litchfield Community Center, 421 Bantam Road.

The evening will feature readings by four prominent regional poets:

Michael Chief Peterson, poet laureate of New Britain
Nadia Sims, poet laureate of Manchester
Steven Parlato, an artist and poet from Middlebury
Jo-Ann Iannotti, a poet and photographer from Litchfield

Litchfield resident Margaret Hunt will serve as the emcee. The evening begins at 6 p.m. with music by Lakeview High student James Quigley, followed by the featured readings and an open mic session for community members.

Both events are free and open to the public. To register for the April 30 showcase, attendees are asked to contact the Litchfield Community Center at info@thecommunitycenter.org.
