Lecture explores WWII Rosie the Riveters and their Revolutionary War roots in Weston

The lives and legacies of World War II’s Rosie the Riveters will be the focus of a free public lecture, “A Pocketful of Rosies,” on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at 2 p.m. at the Weston History & Culture Center (104 Weston Rd, Weston, CT 06883).
Presented by historian Madeleine Eckert, the program examines the wartime contributions of women on the home front and traces their patriotic commitment back to family roots in the American Revolution. The event will take place at the center, located at 104 Weston Road, with parking and entrance on High Acre Road. Registration is recommended, as seating is limited.
During the lecture, Eckert will share the stories of three of her own family members who served as “Rosies” during World War II, highlighting how each contributed to the war effort in different but equally vital ways. The presentation also explores how their sense of service was shaped by generations of family history tied to the Revolutionary War.

Eckert will additionally discuss Connecticut’s Rosie the Riveters: Pulling Together on the Home Front During World War II, a book compiled by former Weston resident Gretchen Caulfield, a past national president of the American Rosie the Riveter Association.
The program is presented in honor of Women’s History Month and is part of the “America 250: The Revolutionary Spirit Lecture Series.” It is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Weston Public Library, the Weston History & Culture Center, and the League of Women Voters of Weston, with support from the Weston America 250 Advisory Committee.
In the event of inclement weather, the lecture will be postponed to Sunday, March 8, at 2 p.m.
Eckert, along with her husband Edward Eckert, has presented American history lectures throughout Connecticut for more than 20 years, covering topics ranging from Fairfield County history to the American Revolution, the Civil War, and World War II. The pair has led cemetery and walking tours, contributed to numerous publications, and served in leadership roles with historical and hereditary organizations. Both are members of the American Rosie the Riveter Association.
