Kommuna Lux bring Ukrainian Street Folk to the Kate September 12
The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, “the Kate”, welcomes Kommuna Lux, on tour from Ukraine, Tuesday, September 12th at 7:30 pm.
“In Odessa, people find togetherness. In Odessa, all will laugh and sing.” Ukraine’s Kommuna Lux validates these words from an old poem, performing their own style called “Odessa Gangsta Folk:” thrilling klezmer music and common street folk songs from their hometown, all with a dose of rocket fuel.
Odessites have always been known for their great tolerance, easy-going lifestyle, and very special sense of humor. This multicultural port city is world-famous for its significant Jewish culture and for being the birthplace of the Urban Chanson genre. The streets are rich with nostalgia and a bohemian Black Sea coastal vibe. These are set to a timeless new level by the vibrant performances of the lovely singer Bagrat Tsurkan and his charming musicians. Kommuna Lux plays joyful songs and melodies from Odessa and all Eastern Europe in spiced up arrangements.
Early 2022 was a turning point for all Ukrainians. Kommuna Lux prepared for a major international tour, but already by February it became clear that, due to the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine, the events were likely to not take place. Regardless of the situation, the director of the band continued preparing for the summer tour and at the same time engaged in charity work.
In particular, the team participated in a charity concert and, despite the shelling of the Odessa, collected funds for victims of military aggression. In total, in 2022, the team held more than 70 concerts in Ukraine and abroad, most of which were for charity. It was during the European tour that the music video for the
song “Hutsulka Ksenia” was filmed in the Swiss Alps and released in January 2023. During their stay in Germany, in July 2022, the band recorded their third studio album, which is expected to be released in the fall of 2023 as they embark on their first tour of the United States.
The Colossus Project, an Old Saybrook-based nonprofit organization that focuses on providing assistance to Ukrainian citizens relocating to the United States, will be on hand to provide information about their mission and services. They assist both Ukrainian beneficiaries and US sponsors by helping them to complete required forms and provide safe and legal travel.
