Katharine Hepburn Museum and Risk Strategies – Gowrie Group Present Virtual Hurricane of 1938 Program
The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, (300 Main St, Old Saybrook, CT 06475) and Risk Strategies – Gowrie Group are offering a free virtual stream of the program “The Hurricane of 1938: The Science and The Stories,” which was originally presented in June of 2023, to commemorate the 86th anniversary of the storm. A link for the stream is available on the homepage of thekate.org and can be viewed on-demand from any device.
On September 21, 1938, a massive hurricane tore through New England leaving in its path a shocking swath of destruction and lost lives. The Hepburn family’s original cottage in Fenwick, a borough of Old Saybrook, was completely destroyed and washed away. Katharine Hepburn included an account of that day and the loss of the family home in her autobiography, Me: Stories of My Life.
This special program explores the impact of the storm from inception to landfall. NBC 30 Chief Meteorologist Ryan Hanrahan presents the science of the storm and its path toward New England; Chris Wisniewski, author of The Hurricane of 1938: Memories of the Storm of the Century, shares memories from survivors; and writer Tom Verde speaks of his family’s tragic loss.
Now a subsidiary of Risk Strategies, Gowrie Group has been a sponsor and partner of the Kate since 2016. Whitney Peterson, Director of Private Client Marketing & Partnerships, shared her thoughts about Risk Strategies’ sponsorship of the 1938 Hurricane Program, “Being a sailor and living along the Connecticut shoreline, I have always had a keen interest in the weather, forecasting, and storm preparation. It is amazing how advanced our forecasting abilities have come since the Hurricane of 1938, when residents of Connecticut had no warning at all. I’m thrilled that we can sponsor this exciting 1938 Hurricane Program at the KATE, so that we can all learn from and reflect on that devastating storm.”
“We are grateful for the support of Risk Strategies – Gowrie Group this year and excited to partner on this program,” said Brett Elliott, executive director of the Kate. “The hurricane was certainly a turning point for Kate as she rode out the storm with family in Fenwick, and, eventually rebuilt the home as we know it today. And, yes the bathtub that survived really is in our museum, courtesy of Lauren Furey and the Harris family.”
