The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center presents a Museum Talk with David Heely and Joan Kramer, the documentary filmmakers that made Katharine Hepburn: All About Me, The Spencer Tracy Legacy: A Tribute by Katharine Hepburn, and other notable profiles of Hollywood legends. “David Heeley and Joan Kramer: In the Company of Katharine Hepburn” takes place on Thursday, May 23, 2024 at 7 pm at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, 300 Main Street, Old Saybrook.
Over a 16-year period, David Heeley and Joan Kramer maintained a professional and personal relationship with Katharine Hepburn, working together on a documentary profile about Spencer Tracy and two about Hepburn herself. The pair spent a great deal of time filming in Old Saybrook and capturing Miss Hepburn’s narration. Included in All About Me are scenes of Hepburn visiting James Pharmacy, Walt’s Market and other Main Street locations, as well as her home in the borough of Fenwick. In this pressentation Joan and David will share personal anecdotes and show never-before-seen outtakes of interviews and footage that didn’t make the cut in their finished films.
Joan and David will also recount stories about their associations with other entertainers including Fred Astaire, Paul Newman and Frank Sinatra, as documented in their book, In the Company of Legends. Beginning with their award-winning profiles of Fred Astaire, the filmmakers established their reputation for finding the unfindable, persuading the reluctant, and maintaining unique relationships long after the end credits rolled. These unique and intimate stories about the productions, and the personalities involved, are amusing, moving, and often revealing. Autographed copies of the book will be available in the Kate Gift Shop.
