Jeffery Lewis
NYC antifolk cult songwriter and comic artist Jeffrey Lewis is teaming up with longtime friends and frequent tourmates The Burning Hell for a tour of the Northeast USA this fall. Hailing from Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island, The Burning Hell will be performing songs from their recently released album Garbage Island, and Jeffrey will be mining his extensive back catalog of songs and hand-drawn short films. Bring your ears and your eyes: in spite of their differences, these two acts share a love of densely-packed narratives, surprising twists, and joyful performances.
Jeffrey Lewis has perfected a scuzzy, urban style of indie-folk, developing from late-90s New York City bedroom tapes into a mighty 21st Century mash-up of folksy spiel and artsy garage, like Pete Seeger meeting Sonic Youth. A born and raised denizen of the Lower East Side, Lewis’s home recordings were discovered by Rough Trade Records in 2001. Since that year’s release of his first official album “The Last Time I Did Acid I Went Insane and Other Favorites”, Lewis has toured the world and released numerous acclaimed records on Rough Trade and other labels. He’s built a worldwide fanbase while regularly changing band names, most recently recording as Jeffrey Lewis & The Voltage for Don Giovanni Records and Moshi Moshi Records.
A list of the Jeffrey Lewis band’s sonic touchstones doesn’t look all that different from a list of the seminal acts Jeffrey has done gigs and tours with, like Daniel Johnston, Roky Erickson, The Fall, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, The Vaselines and The Mountain Goats. Rave reviews have come from just about every corner of the music world, including glowing reviews and/or multi-page features, in publications like Rolling Stone, The New York Times, Uncut, Mojo, NME and others, and praise from music stars like Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie), Will Oldham, Jarvis Cocker (Pulp), Laura Marling, Regina Spektor and the late David Berman (Silver Jews).
Jeffrey is also an illustrator, and has written/drawn 13 issues of a comic book series called Fuff,
Still based on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, the year 2023 sees no signs of creative slowdown for Jeffrey Lewis, with more tour dates being added to the calendar in the USA, UK and Europe and new comic book projects nearing completion. Live gigs continue to incorporate Jeffrey’s narrative folk acoustics and garage indie-pop wig-outs, as well as the occasional inclusion of his multi-media full-color illustrated/sung histories and fantasies (some of which have been featured on History.com).
“Jeffrey Lewis is an amazing musician, and if you don’t know his songs you probably have a hole in your heart that can only be filled by his words… I did!” – Regina Spektor
“Hands down my favorite contemporary songwriter” – Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie)
“Jeffrey is the best pure songwriter I know of” – David Berman (Silver Jews)
“A second. That’s all he needs to dazzle.” – Les Inrockuptibles
“One of the most extraordinary voices in contemporary music returns… for the euphoric and highly addictive Bad Wiring. Immediate, charming and perhaps the best delivery to date from one of the very most singular voices” – Deluxe Magazine (Albums of the Year)
“Weird? Very… but also downright inspiring” (****) – Rolling Stone
“A wordy force of nature… stirs you up with politics or knocks you sideways with sadness… ideas burst from Jeffrey Lewis like an overstuffed suitcase – strange ones, funny ones, poignant ones, usually a mixture…. kicking out ramshackle fuzzbomb jams… it’s difficult to imagine how any couple of hours spent in Lewis’s company couldn’t prove inspirational.” (****) – The Guardian
The Burning Hell
The Burning Hell is the ongoing musical project of songwriter Mathias Kom and multi-instrumentalists Ariel Sharratt and Jake Nicoll. Their densely populated genre-shifting songs are packed with an abundance of literary, historical, cultural, and pop-cultural forebears, heroes and villains, subjects and objects, stories and hooks. They move with heavy rhyme and a light step, incorporating a frequent fixation on apocalypse and ruin into work that celebrates participation in a mutually created, ever surprising, delightful, and even occasionally beautiful world. Which is to say they’re good dance partners and they want to dance with you.
The Burning Hell are DIY in the best possible sense—underlining the “do”—and they’ve famously ventured to every out-of-the-way island and inland neglected by the less adventurous, emphasizing presence and connection across latitudes, longitudes, and time, affirming a commitment to the political power of sharing music. It is a profoundly optimistic gesture delivered by way of killer tunes, exuberant hooks, and joyful live performances.
‘Garbage Island,’ The Burning Hell’s newest album, was released in June 2022 on You’ve Changed Records in North America and BB*Island everywhere else.
” **** Funny, sardonic, and literate. Add in a new-wavey, Loaded-era VU sensibility, and it’s impossible not to be swayed by these acerbically funny story songs.” – Mojo Magazine
“…super literate and fantastically droll, over backings that range from bubbling synth pop and acoustic folk to rattly punk and even a spot of semi-calypso. Silver Jews and Jeffrey Lewis spring to mind on the terrific “Birdwatching”; “Bird Queen of Garbage Island” sounds like a glorious revival of Tom Tom Club.” – Uncut Magazine
9/10 “Maybe The Burning Hell won’t be for everyone – I don’t think they’d even want to be for everyone – but if you like brilliant, thought-provoking lyrics, superb musicianship and killer tunes, you know what… you might just love this too.” –
