Take to the streets of Connecticut’s capital city with the Butler-McCook House & Garden, a Connecticut Landmarks museum. Each year, the historic house museum hosts sold-out tours that welcome attendees to put on their walking shoes and forge new paths through Hartford’s history. This year, join the museum between April and September for six Historic Hartford Walking Tours, including brand-new tours on Preserving Historic Main Street and Hartford’s Women.

For the first walking tour of the season, traverse the streets and sites of “Frederick Law Olmsted’s Hartford” to commemorate this illustrious native son. Highlights include the Butler-McCook House & Garden, Olmsted’s birth site, Bushnell Park, the Capitol Grounds, High Street, Ann Street, and Keney Clock Tower, with optional visit to Olmsted’s gravesite in Old North Cemetery at the conclusion. This event will take place on Saturday, April 26.

On Saturday, May 3, return to Hartford for a new variation of the “Discovering Main Street Hartford” walking tour: “Preserving Historic Main Street.” This walk will proceed north up Main Street and return to Butler-McCook House & Garden with a collaborative stop at the Ancient Burying Ground. Participants will discuss changes to Main Street and what has been saved and why. Participants are encouraged to share their recollections about Main Street and its importance. This walk is offered free as part of Jane’s Walk in collaboration with the Ancient Burying Ground.

A brand-new walking tour invites visitors to discover and celebrate the lives of Hartford Women. Learn about Hannah Bunce Watson, Caroline Hewins, Elizabeth Colt, Beatrice Fox Auerbach, Ann Uccello & Carrie Saxon Perry, Ella Grasso, Katharine Houghton Hepburn, Mary Townsend Seymour and Connecticut Suffragists, the Beecher sisters, and more. This event will take place on Saturday, May 10 and September 27.

In celebration of Mother’s Day, spend May 10 with Connecticut Landmarks. At the conclusion of the Historic Hartford Walking Tour: Hartford Women, drive 20 minutes to Suffield’s Phelps-Hatheway House & Garden for a special women-focused museum tour and Mother’s Day Tea with Chef Renee Scharoff from Blonde on the Run Catering. Tea registrants can sign up for the walking tour for just $5 with a special code sent via email. Tea tickets can be purchased at https://ctlandmarks.org/event/mothers-day-tea-with-chef-renee/On Saturday, May 17, set out from the Butler-McCook House to explore the artistic treasures and monuments of Hartford along Main Street, in Bushnell Park, and at the State Capitol Building. “Hartford Art & Monuments Walk” explores how public art and monuments create a shared understanding of the events, people, and ideas that a city values.

The annual Connecticut Trails Weekend creates an opportunity for people to get outside and explore the many trails our state has to offer. Join Butler-McCook museum staff on Sunday, June 8 for a free “Discovering Historic Main Street” walking tour. From the Butler-McCook House & Garden to the G. Fox Building, learn how the city has evolved through its significant structures: City Hall, the Wadsworth Atheneum, the Travelers Tower, the Old State House, Center Church and the Ancient Burying Ground.

The final Historic Hartford Walking Tour on September 20 will explore the architectural treasures of Coltsville and the Charter Oak neighborhoods. Butler-McCook museum staff will discuss the impacts of industry and immigration on these neighborhoods in Hartford, including sites like the Colt Factory and its worker houses, the Church of the Good Shepherd and Parish House, the Capewell Nail Factory, and the Polish National Home.

All walks, except for “Discovering Historic Main Street” and “Preserving Historic Main Street” cost $15 a person, with discounts available for Connecticut Landmarks members. All walks will leave from the rear (east) end of the Butler-McCook House & Garden at 10 am and end at 12 noon. For information on tickets and parking, visit https://ctlandmarks.org/events/tag/historichartford/. Advance registration is required as space is limited, and tickets sell fast.
