Hartford falls to Loudoun 2-1 on Monday night
After waiting through a nearly three hour lightning delay before the start of the second half, Hartford Athletic fell to Loudoun United 2-1.
Hartford got out to an ideal start in tonight’s match, taking the early lead in the eighth minute. Edgardo Rito lofted a ball from midfield to Prince Saydee, who was heading towards Loudoun’s box. Saydee stopped on a dime to lose his defender and slotted his shot past Loudoun keeper Dane Jacomen to the near post, giving the Green and Blue a 1-0 lead. The goal was Saydee’s fifth of the season, and his first tally since April 15th. Rito picked up the assist, his first for Hartford since joining the team on June 8th.
Loudoun responded in the 20th minute, equalizing on a goal from Jackson Hopkins. After some quality connecting play from Hassou Landry and Zach Ryan to get behind Hartford’s back line and into the box, Landry and Hopkins were alone with only Joe Rice to beat. Landry passed the ball across to Hopkins, and the Loudoun forward tapped his shot into the open net to tie the game at 1-1.
Hartford had multiple scoring threats through the rest of the half, just missing on chances to regain the lead. Prince Saydee made a run up the right flank in the 26th minute and crossed the ball to Elvis Amoh, leaving him one-on-one with Jacomen, but the Loudoun keeper made a strong save on Amoh’s shot from straight on. Saydee continued to pose a threat to Loudoun in their third, creating space for himself and taking a shot that went just wide of the right post from outside the box in the 28th minute.
Later in the 42nd minute, Danny Barrera lobbed a brilliant ball up ahead to Amoh heading towards Loudoun’s box, but his shot was denied again by Jacomen. Hartford defended well after conceding, holding Loudoun to just two more shots that were both off target. The teams took to the locker room tied at 1-1.
Before the start of the second half, the game was paused due to lightning in the area. The delay lasted two hours and 46 minutes, and the second half began at 11:04 PM eastern time.
Loudoun United were in control for the majority of the second half, recording eight touches in Hartford’s box and putting three shots on target through the first 30 minutes. In the 83rd minute, they took the lead on a goal from Tommy Williamson. Capitalizing on a turnover in Hartford’s half, Williamson had a breakaway and beat the charging Joe Rice to give Loudoun a 2-1 lead.
Hartford had their best chance to tie the game in the 88th minute when Danny Barrera played a well-weighted ball into Louodun’s box for second half substitute Antoine Hoppenot, but Jacomen came up with yet another big save on Hoppenot’s shot. The final whistle blew after four minutes of stoppage time, giving Loudoun the 2-1 win.
Danny Barrea was a bright spot for Hartford in his return to the starting lineup, creating four chances and doing well to help Hartford get forward from the midfield. Edgardo Rito also had an active night on the flanks, creating two chances and firing seven crosses. Joe Rice made a season-high four saves for the Green and Blue as well.
Athletic return home this coming Saturday, July 8th to face San Diego Loyal SC at 7:00 PM.
