HartBeat Ensemble’s Youth Play Institute to Take on The American Dream (or, The Lies of It All), an Original Devised Theatre Piece on December 13 and 14
What happens when thirteen students from diverse backgrounds get together to discuss the social and political issues of our day in order to devise a brand-new theatre piece? Audiences are invited to discover what’s on their minds and in their hearts when HartBeat Ensemble’s Youth Play Institute (YPI) presents their original work, The American Dream (or, The Lies of It All), on Friday, December 13 at 6pm and Saturday, December 14 at 2pm. Both performances, which will be held at HartBeat Ensemble’s Carriage House Theatre at 360 Farmington Avenue in Hartford, are free and open to all.Reservations can be made at HartBeatEnsemble.org and donations are gratefully accepted.
Now in its 18th year, Youth Play Institute is a paid internship program in acting, playwriting, theater design or stage management for young adults between the ages of 16 and 21; a program where youth are developing and expressing their perspectives about social justice and engaging in their lives through a political lens.
The Fall 2024 YPI cohort is inquiring about “the American Dream and the lies we’ve been told.” The YPI process of theatre creation begins with the interns engaging in a research and writing process. This year’s student artists are asking tough questions such as, “What do we want for ourselves?;” “Who can afford the dream we are told to aspire to?;” Whose land was taken away in the process?;” and “Is violence really the answer?” Once research is complete, the interns devise an original piece of theatre that asks tough questions and explores solutions.
HartBeat Ensemble’s YPI invites all to join them as they share the results of their process with a live presentation and a call to action about the land we live on and the dreams we seek. YPI 2024 Co-Facilitators are Sarah Ghonaim and Jeanika Browne-Springer.Student Director is Ellie Kelly (CT State Community College at Capital). Technical support is provided by Roberto “Laugh” Sanchez.
