The Record Company, Grammy-nominated rock band is set to perform at Space Ballroom tomorrow night in Hamden. Their latest album Play Loud (Apple Music and Spotify) delivers high-energy rock came out in 2021. Produced by Dave Sardy, this captivating record showcases the band’s growth in both music and songwriting, proving why they’ve earned a solid reputation for electrifying live shows. I had an opportunity to speak to lead singer and guitarist Chris Von about the history of the band, what the band is doing next, and tomorrow night’s show.

How did you come up with the name The Record Company?
In 2010, Alex, the bass player, and I bonded over his record collection. He had, like say acting like, I don’t know, like 15 years ago or something. He just decided I’m gonna go all vinyl. So he started just going vinyl. And he was early enough to the game or early enough to where the game got popular where he bought a lot of them for very cheap that like stuff he got for 50 cents to a dollar back then is now 50 bucks. So, so he had a pile of records and we just we bonded over that. There was a lot of records, he had a pile of old blues records that had been gifted to him through an uncle and he hadn’t dove into him yet. And that’s like where my world is, like muddy waters and all this. So I put on Muddy Water’s live in Newport 1960 and he freaked out. And then, um, and then he showed me a lot of the Dead Boot legs. And then we both bonded over old, you know, we both found out that we liked the Beastie Boys and old punk bands like The Stooges and Ramones and you know and of course your Hendrix’s and, all the stuff, the Stones. So just started listening to it. And the name of the band came out of that. We were just so shocked that nobody had taken it. And it was kind of at that time where people were discussing what was gonna happen to record labels and we didn’t really think we’d ever get signed. So we were like, well, we’ll just be The Record Company. You know, I mean, it’s just the band like The Who, The Record Company, there are so many band names. We realized nobody had it and we just took it.

Can you tell me the history of the band including any musicians the band members admired?
When I was a young, young kid, I was a dairy farmer. My dad’s a dairy farmer in Wisconsin, and he still is, and both brothers are. I just started getting my mom was really into music and so was my dad. My dad liked rock and roll, I got a lot of Credence and Hendrix and the Doors and Bruce Springsteen and all that stuff. And then my mom so she liked all the Motown stuff. She loved soul. You know, everything from Otis Reddings to the Temptations. And then I just kind of, discovered Muddy Waters by accident. I just liked the name and I was like, what’s this? The album that I ended up getting was an album called Heart Again, which was Muddy’s kind of comeback record near the end of his life. And it had Johnny Winter on Dobro and I just lost my mind. But Zeppelin, you know, the song remains the same as when I was a kid. Changed my life. I never looked at music and genre. I always just, it was like if it flipped my switch, I didn’t care what it was called, where it came from. That served me well. I still listen that to like that to this day.

After the tour what is next for The Record Company? Are any upcoming projects coming up?
Our new record is complete and we’re about to drop a single here in June. And then, the album will be following at the end of the summer, with another single in there somewhere. And we’ll just, we’re just gonna keep touring and touring and touring and touring.

If you could tour with anyone right now who would it be?
Oh, my, the ultimate fantasy is the Stones. I mean, they’re my favorite rock and roll band, you know, so my, I always say The Beatles are the greatest band of all time. The Stones are the greatest rock and roll band of all time.

What can we expect to see during your performance at Space Ballroom tomorrow night?
I mean, it’s a rock and roll show, that’s fun. We enjoy, you know we put everything we have on the stage. I would say it’s one less time you get to play, not one more. So give it, give it all you got. We got big drums and big bass and we, we aren’t afraid to lean on ’em. Our fans are very friendly people, they’re very inviting people and they are across the spectrum. I mean I’ve seen seven-year-old kids on this tour. I’ve seen 17, I’ve seen 27 and I’ve seen 70. I mean, you know, it’s like, it’s all in between there and all are welcome. Its a good environment, positive environment.

I did reach out to the local record stores and Gerosa Records in Brookfield does have The Record Company albums in stock.
