Flanders Nature Center & Land Trust and Taft School to host third Environmental Research Symposium in Watertown

Flanders Nature Center & Land Trust and The Taft School will host their third biennial Environmental Research Symposium on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2026, at 7 p.m. The free event will take place in the Laube Auditorium at The Taft School, 110 Woodbury Road in Watertown.

The symposium will showcase research by scientists, conservation professionals and graduate students who study Connecticut’s forests, wildlife and natural habitats. Attendees will learn about the environmental challenges and conservation opportunities facing the region, and how current research helps guide stewardship and management decisions across the state.

Many of the featured studies take place on conserved lands in northwest Connecticut, including properties owned and stewarded by Flanders and other local land trusts. This year’s presentations will cover climate change impacts on arthropods, bat conservation and forest management, long-term changes in lichen communities, forest health assessments, dragonfly and damselfly surveys, restoration of rare native plants, and habitat research focused on Prairie Warblers.

Presenting speakers include Dr. Matthew Baker of Northeastern University and Yale University, James Fischer of White Memorial Conservation Center, Meredith Goza of the University of Connecticut, and Billy Gridley of Aton Forest. They will be joined by Jack E. Hatajik of the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, Rory Larson of Steep Rock Association, Tara Spears of the Northwest Connecticut Land Conservancy and Alton P. Spencer of Western Connecticut State University. After the presentations, guests can meet the researchers, ask questions and learn more about projects underway across the region.

The symposium is open to the public, and pre-registration is requested. Registration is available online through the Flanders Nature Center website. For more information, contact the Flanders administrative office at 203-263-3711 or flanders@flandersnaturecenter.org.
