Fairfield’s Incoming Class of 2028 Breaks Academic Records
As the summer winds down, Fairfield prepares to welcome its largest and most academically competitive cohort in University history, on August 30
Fairfield University’s Class of 2028 won’t beginclasses until September 3, but before even stepping foot on campus they are already making a remarkable impact. The incoming first-year class of just over 1,450 students has set the bar high, marking the most competitive admission cycle in University history. An unprecedented 33 percent acceptance rate reflects the rising popularity of the Jesuit institution among top-performing students.
The newest Stags were selected from a record-breaking pool of 18,505 applicants, boasting an average weighted GPA of 3.96. Among them, 128 first-year students are Magis Scholars who have been invited to join the Honors Program.
The Class of 2028 brings a rich tapestry of geographic diversity, with students representing 30 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and 12 countries. This year’s class marks a significant increase in national representation, with twice as many students from the Midwest and D.C. compared to two years ago. Fairfield’s strategic location between New York City and Boston — the hub of the largest concentration of Fortune 500 companies in the U.S. — enhances its appeal by offering unparalleled internship, research, and employment opportunities.
A noteworthy trend this year is the increasing number of students who have designated Fairfield as their top choice. More than 25 percent of the incoming class have been admitted through Early Decision plans, reflecting a strong commitment to the University. Corry Unis, vice president for enrollment management, emphasized that the Class of 2028 embodies more than academic prowess. “Fairfield’s Jesuit mission and Catholic identity are
drivers for shaping the leaders of tomorrow. Our students are trained in ethical leadership and complex problem-solving, preparing them to serve as ‘men and women for others’ and make meaningful contributions to the world.”
Also included in this class are 98 students from Jesuit and Cristo Rey high schools, with 26 of them joining the third cohort of Company Scholars. This unique program honors the principles of the Jesuits and their longstanding mission to provide first-generation students with pathways to higher learning. The Company Scholars earn four-year, full-tuition scholarships and benefit from a robust supportive network of faculty mentors and career advisors, helping them to thrive both academically and professionally.
No doubt, the Class of 2028 is set to enrich an already vibrant student life community. “Fairfield is an exceptional place for scholars and leaders to call home,” said Unis. “We are excited to welcome them to campus and give them the fuel they need to set the world on fire.”
Fairfield University continues to earn high national recognition, with notable placements in Money’s Best Colleges in America, Princeton Review, U.S. News & World Report, and in WSJ/College Pulse for salary impact. 98 percent of graduates secure concrete plans or are pursuing graduate degrees within six months of graduation.
