Fairfield University annual Student Research Symposium is April 25

The annual Student Research Symposium at Fairfield University in April 25, 2024
Students work with Professor Shannon Harding in a Neuroscience laboratory

The annual Student Research Symposium at Fairfield University offers a distinctive chance to learn about student research through live poster presentations. While the focus is on undergraduate research, presenters will also include master’s program and doctoral students. All five schools will participate, representing nearly every major and a wide array of interdisciplinary minors.

More than 150 faculty-mentored, individual student research projects will showcase work that is beyond typical coursework, according to Margaret McClure, PhD, associate vice provost for research and scholarship.
“The scope and quality of faculty mentorship of student research projects is really unique to Fairfield and truly sets our student experience apart from that of students at other institutions,” said McClure. “The Student Research Symposium showcases the breadth and depth of the student research opportunities, all of which are thanks to the tireless dedication of the extraordinary Fairfield University faculty.”

Two undergraduate student researchers include Maddie Kitlas ’24 and Elani Gordon ’24, faculty-mentored by associate professor of psychology, Shannon M. Harding, PhD, P’14 . After two years in Dr. Harding’s neuroscience research lab, Kitlas has delved into studying adolescent social isolation’s impact on rat behavior, including anxiety, depression, memory, and addiction.

“I have learned so much working with Dr. Harding’s lab. I have completed both supervised and independent research projects and gotten to design my own behavioral test,” said Kitlas. “My favorite part has been working with my fellow lab members and traveling to different conferences to present our work. I am looking forward to seeing everyone’s work at this year’s research symposium and getting to show my peers the work our lab has been doing because I am very proud of it,” said Kitlas.

The symposium offers a comprehensive schedule, allowing visitors to delve into a wide range of research topics.
