Connecticut Sun launches Solar Sisters program for Bridgeport students

The Connecticut Sun launched a new community program this year aimed at teaching young girls in grades three through five about sustainability and sports. The initiative, called Solar Sisters, builds upon piloted events from 2025. The program is inspired by the team’s tenure as the only WNBA franchise in the Green Sports Alliance.

The program partnered with the Interdistrict Discovery Magnet School in Bridgeport to host two events for local students. The first event was an Earth Day Celebration held at the SHU Discovery Science Center. The gathering encouraged the 73 girls in attendance to pursue careers within STEM and sustainability fields.

Students at the celebration participated in Earth Day projects, viewed a planetarium show, and explored museum exhibits. They also listened to a welcome panel featuring women leaders from the STEM and sustainability sectors. Each attendee received a swag bag and giveaways at the conclusion of the event.

While the Interdistrict Discovery Magnet School is located adjacent to the SHU Discovery Science Center, students typically cannot access premium features like the planetarium or live demonstrations without a fee. To remove this barrier, the Connecticut Sun Foundation raised $2,000 to cover admission costs for the 73 students.

Ninety percent of the students involved in the Solar Sisters program are athletes. Organizers designed the program to provide representation and show that girls, particularly girls of color, can become leaders in the sports sustainability and STEM fields.

The Interdistrict Discovery Magnet School operates as a pre-K through eighth-grade public school with a science theme on the museum grounds. Museum staff, trustees, and representatives from Bridgeport Public Schools, the City of Bridgeport, and Sacred Heart University worked together to establish the institution in 2004.
