Concert Review: The Lumineers at Mohegan Sun

After a notable performance at Citi Field, the Home of the New York Mets, New Jersey natives, The Lumineers, are back at the Mohegan Sun Arena – this time with Automatic, their most introspective and emotionally charged album to date. At its core, Automatic feels like a quiet reckoning, a reflection on the slow, sometimes painful process of moving on from a relationship that no longer fits. It’s a shift from their signature warm, rustic sound toward something a little rougher around the edges, more raw and vulnerable. The album tells its stories through moments of aftermath – lingering in the silence, the hesitation, and the weight of what’s left unsaid. That same reflective energy flowed into their performance, where even the most familiar sing-alongs carried a new sense of emotional depth. The Lumineers played with intention and presence, creating a space that felt less like a typical arena show and more like a shared moment to reflect, connect, and quietly release.

Hippo Campus opened the night with a set that felt both huge and full of heart. Their grand, cinematic sound filled the arena – shimmering guitars, layered vocals, and unexpected clarinet solos that added a playful twist to their already rich arrangements. The band clearly had fun up there, dancing around the stage and feeding off each other’s energy in a way that felt totally natural. It wasn’t just a warm-up, it was a moment of its own, joyful and expansive, setting the perfect tone before The Lumineers took the stage.
The Lumineers opened their set with a sense of quiet grandeur, stepping into a stage bathed in warm earth tones and nature visuals that shifted like the passing seasons – cool blues, soft greens, and golden hues that made the whole arena feel like a living, breathing landscape. Wesley Schultz, with his long braids and outdoorsy look, could’ve wandered in straight from the Colorado wilderness, while Jeremiah Fraites looked like a time traveler from 2013: buttoned up, clean-cut, and just slightly out of sync. The contrast was unexpected but oddly charming, a visual reminder of how far they’ve come since their Ho Hey days. That playful, evolving energy spilled into their performance, where they played alongside each other effortlessly carrying that lighthearted and deeply emotional. With a nearly 30-song setlist, the band took fans on a journey through both the past and present versions of themselves – early favorites like Flowers in Your Hair and Angela meeting newer, more reflective songs like Same Old. Pianist Stelth Ulvang was an absolute blast to watch, barefoot, grinning, and bouncing around his piano like it was the main attraction at a house party. He brought a chaotic joy to the stage, spinning, jumping, and dancing through the set like he was having the time of his life – and making sure the rest of us were too. But then came You’re All I Got, and the mood shifted, becoming more serious, stripped-back, and heavy in the best way. It was the kind of moment that brought everyone back down to earth, reminding us why this band’s music hits as hard as it does.

One of the most unforgettable moments of the night came during BRIGHTSIDE, when Schultz jumped off the stage and made his way through the pit, singing as he walked all around the arena. I wasn’t expecting to be face-to-face with him, but there I was, suddenly within arm’s reach as he shook hands and connected with fans one by one. It was a simple gesture, but one that said everything about the band’s relationship with their audience. Over the years, The Lumineers have grown alongside their fanbase, and it’s clear how much that bond means to them. In that moment, surrounded by a sea of surprised and smiling faces, the love felt mutual. That energy carried throughout the entire show, through constant crowd interaction, playful gestures, and even a slightly fumbled tambourine toss during their rendition of Ophilia (which was dedicated to Mr. Met, who took a tumble during the song at the last show) that earned laughs from both the band and the crowd. Moments like these reminded everyone in the room that this experience only thrives because of the fans, their energy, their support, and that’s something the band never takes for granted.

It’s hard not to be struck by how far The Lumineers have come. From their early days playing tiny rooms to now commanding arenas with nearly 30-song setlists, the growth is undeniable – but what makes it all the more special is that they’ve never lost sight of where they started. Every song they played felt like its own little production, carrying the weight of their stories and the heart that built this band from the ground up. At one point, Wesley shared a memory from those early days, riding home across the George Washington Bridge in the dead of winter with a smashed car window after someone broke in just to steal his E-ZPass. It was a far cry from the stage he stood on now, bathed in a warm spotlight like a ray of sunlight. Smiling out at the crowd, he said, “You gotta be crazy to dream up something as big as this, so thank you.” They closed the night with REPRISE, Cleopatra, and Stubborn Love, leaving the room buzzing with emotion. And the truth is, even if you’re not their biggest fan, The Lumineers will still treat you like family.
