City Gallery announced Sea Glass: Interpretations of Water as July exhibit

City Gallery has announced an upcoming summer exhibition titled Sea Glass: Interpretations of Water, scheduled to run from July 10 through August 1, 2026. The collaborative show features an unexpected collection of fiber arts, paintings, and sculptures created by four regional member artists. The public can view the display weekly from Friday through Sunday between 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., or by scheduling a private appointment.

The scheduled exhibition highlights the work of Roberta Friedman, Rita Hannafin, Sheila Kaczmarek, and Kathy Kane. Each artist utilizes different creative mediums to document distinct thematic stories inspired by living near the water. An official public artist reception has been announced for Saturday, July 25, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Friedman has exhibited her encaustics, collages, and paintings throughout the New Haven region for more than 40 years. Her background includes participating in watercolor and design workshops across the country, studying alongside instructors such as Jan Hart and Hilda Levy. She continues to teach water media and collage techniques to children, teenagers, and adults across the greater New Haven area.

Hannafin focuses on art quilts, combining various textiles, stitching, paint, collage work, and digital imagery to form her narratives. Since moving to Connecticut in 2004, she has used the textile medium to explore landscapes, climate change, political concepts, and personal stories. She is a member of the Black Rock Art Guild and the Studio Art Quilt Associates, and her creations are listed in the National Registry of Quilts.

Kane has operated a local creative studio in New Haven’s Erector Square for more than 30 years. The East Haven resident is a member of the Guilford Art League and the Connecticut Watercolor Society, and has traveled nationally to display her award-winning watercolor paintings at juried museum exhibitions. Kaczmarek focuses on mixed media and clay, having completed a five-year apprenticeship at the Guilford Art Center ceramic studio. Her physical process involves both high- and low-fired clay, pit firing, and Raku, occasionally introducing metal, paint, and encaustic wax to the surfaces.

Both the primary exhibition and the weekend artist reception are free and open to the general public. City Gallery is located at 994 State Street in New Haven. Additional event details, gallery profiles, and administrative contact resources are hosted on the organization’s verified website.
