Cheshire Academy rebrands Roxbury program, expands brain science-based learning pathways

Cheshire Academy (10 Main St, Cheshire, CT 06410) has announced the next chapter of its long-standing Roxbury program, unveiling the newly rebranded Roxbury Center for Learning & Leadership, a neuroscience-driven initiative designed to support student growth across academics, athletics and leadership.

Marking its 25th anniversary, the program builds on decades of personalized learning with an expanded mission grounded in Mind, Brain, and Education research. School leaders say the updated center integrates neuroscience, psychology and pedagogy into daily academic and community life, helping students better understand how they learn and how to apply those insights beyond the classroom.

“Roxbury has always been a differentiator for Cheshire Academy,” said Marc Aronson, dean of academics. “As we enter this next chapter, we’re drawing on cutting-edge cognitive science to help every student reach the next level. When learners understand how their brains work best, they gain the confidence and critical thinking skills they need to thrive.”

The program traces its roots to the early 20th century, when the school operated as The Roxbury School, known for small-group and one-to-one instruction modeled after the Oxford-Cambridge tutorial system. That legacy continued in 2000 with the Roxbury Academic Support Program, which grew to serve nearly 20% of the student body through individualized coaching.

The newly expanded Roxbury Center now offers five personalized pathways, each available through varying levels of support: academic excellence, student-athlete development, aspiring leadership, academic support focused on executive function and cognitive skills, and English language learner support. Each pathway provides one-to-one or small-group coaching tailored to students’ goals and learning styles.

While participation in the personalized pathways is optional, school officials said all students benefit from the center’s influence. Faculty members across departments are trained in adolescent learning science and apply brain-based teaching principles in classrooms, athletics, advisory programs and residential life.

Administrators said the initiative reinforces Cheshire Academy’s commitment to evidence-based education and to preparing students as purposeful global citizens.

“With this evolution, Roxbury is no longer just a support program,” Aronson said. “It’s a schoolwide framework for helping every student unlock their potential.”
