Big men, bigger battles, and a whole lot of respect: All Star Sumo takes over Foxwoods

After returning from an international trip the night before, I unfortunately couldn’t make it to Foxwoods Resort Casino for Saturday night’s All Star Sumo event. But this was one show I didn’t want to miss covering, so I sent a representative from Finding Connecticut to experience the evening firsthand and report back. And judging by the enthusiastic report I received, I missed one heck of a show!
On Saturday, October 24, the Premier Theater at Foxwoods welcomed All Star Sumo, featuring eight wrestlers from Japan and Mongolia for an evening of competition, athleticism, and a fascinating introduction to one of the world’s most distinctive sports.

I’ve never attended a sumo wrestling match myself. While I’ve experienced boxing and other sporting events over the years, sumo has always struck me as something entirely different. And based on the firsthand observations from our representative, that’s exactly what it turned out to be. What stood out most wasn’t simply the enormous size of the competitors, although that was certainly impressive. It was the remarkable balance between fierce competition and genuine respect. Unlike some combat sports, where intimidation, trash talk, and antagonizing opponents can become part of the spectacle, sumo demonstrated a very different approach.
The wrestlers bowed to one another, exchanged smiles, and even helped their opponents back to their feet following matches. They clearly wanted to win, but that competitive drive never seemed to overshadow their respect for one another. At one point, a wrestler was injured and unable to continue competing. Even then, his scheduled opponents entered the ring and bowed to formally accept their victories. It’s a level of sportsmanship that deserves recognition, particularly in an era when so much of professional sports entertainment revolves around manufactured rivalries and confrontation.

And then there was the sheer size of these athletes!
One of the evening’s most fascinating aspects was watching competitors of dramatically different weights face off against one another. Unlike boxing and wrestling, where weight classes are an essential part of the competition, these sumo wrestlers competed without those divisions. Imagine a 270-pound athlete going head-to-head against someone weighing more than 500 pounds! Even more remarkable, according to our representative, the smallest wrestler of the evening recorded the most victories, defeating opponents who sometimes weighed nearly twice as much. It was a powerful demonstration that sumo involves considerably more than simply being the biggest person in the ring. Technique, balance, leverage, timing, and strategy all play important roles. Of course, when two competitors bring a combined weight of more than 1,000 pounds into the ring, there’s no denying the extraordinary physical force involved!
Fortunately, the evening offered plenty of entertainment beyond the competition itself. The event’s emcees kept things lively with humor, playful commentary, and plenty of audience interaction. One of the hosts also spoke fluent Japanese, communicating directly with the wrestlers and referee throughout the event.

That combination of competition and entertainment helped make the experience accessible and enjoyable, even for spectators who had little or no previous exposure to sumo wrestling. And the audience certainly responded! Our representative described a diverse crowd whose enthusiasm continued to grow as the evening progressed. What began with a sense of curiosity quickly developed into genuine excitement as spectators became increasingly invested in the matches. The cheers grew louder, the reactions more animated, and by the later rounds, the crowd was fully engaged. That’s often the hallmark of a successful live event. You don’t necessarily need to arrive as a fan. Sometimes, the experience itself is enough to make you one.
Foxwoods has built a reputation for bringing an impressive variety of entertainment to Connecticut, and All Star Sumo offered something decidedly different from the typical concert, comedy show, or sporting event. There was extraordinary athleticism, fascinating tradition, good-natured humor, and, perhaps most importantly, a genuine sense of respect among the competitors. Our representative left thoroughly impressed, having enjoyed an evening that was as entertaining as it was unexpected.
As for me, I’m disappointed that my travel schedule kept me from experiencing it firsthand. But after hearing the enthusiastic account of Saturday night’s event, All Star Sumo has certainly earned a place on my list of shows I’d like to see. After all, how often do you get the opportunity to watch more than half a ton of athletes battle for supremacy, then bow, smile, and help each other back to their feet?
If All Star Sumo makes a return visit to Connecticut, it’s an experience worth putting on your calendar.
