Become a Hunger Hero: Hillside Food Outreach Rallies Community for Hunger Action Month
In recognition of Hunger Action Month this September, Hillside Food Outreach, a nonprofit dedicated to delivering high-quality, nutritious food to low-income and limited mobility families, seniors, and the chronically ill, is rallying the community to combat food insecurity by joining its Hunger Heroes program. As food insecurity continues to rise to alarming levels, Hillside serves over 2,000 individuals across Fairfield, Westchester, and Putnam Counties each month.
Hillside Food Outreach’s Hunger Heroes program is at the forefront of its efforts, offering community members the opportunity to make a lasting impact through a monthly donation. For as little as $10 per month, Hillside can provide enough nutritious food to feed a person for two weeks. With the demand for its services steadily increasing, the nonprofit is seeking new Hunger Heroes to ensure that no one in the community goes hungry.
“Hunger Action Month is a critical time to reflect on the stark realities of food insecurity in our region and take meaningful action,” said Kathy Purdy, CEO and Founder of Hillside Food Outreach. “Our Hunger Heroes enable us to provide consistent, reliable assistance to those who need it most. Whether through monthly donations or hands-on volunteer work, Hillside supporters are making a tangible difference in the lives of our neighbors.”
Recent data from Feeding America highlights a troubling trend: 468,150 people in Connecticut are now food insecure, an increase of 23 percent. As part of a nationwide crisis, this surge in need has placed additional strain on organizations like Hillside, which rely on community support to sustain their operations.
In addition to the Hunger Heroes program, there are several other impactful ways to get involved with Hillside for Hunger Action Month. One-time donations play a vital role in ensuring that the organization can continue serving those in need. Opportunities are also available to volunteer as a delivery driver or assist at the warehouse.
“Every contribution counts,” Purdy emphasized. “Our supporters, who we consider true hunger heroes, ensure that Hillside’s shelves are always stocked, and our services remain uninterrupted. The difference we make together is profound — our clients consistently report improvements in their health and well-being as a result of our deliveries.”
Hillside Food Outreach is headquartered in Mount Kisco, N.Y. and operates in Fairfield County through its Danbury, CT satellite location. To learn more about volunteer opportunities, call 914-747-0095 or visit hillsidefoodoutreach.org.
