Avalonia Land Conservancy is excited to announce special events happening this month
Events are open to the public and free of charge
On Saturday September 7, join Avalonia at 10 a.m. for the grand opening and ribbon cutting of the new Richard and Mary Cooper Preserve, located at 41 Hewitt Rd in North Stonington. Enjoy refreshments and a dedication ceremony, followed by a short, guided hike. The Cooper Preserve is a serene 3-acre parcel with quiet trails and views of an emergent wetland that connects to the federally designated wild and scenic Shunnock River.
On Sunday, September 8, explore the Wequetequock Cove Preserve in Stonington from 1 – 3 pm with Avalonia’s Beth Sullivan and Lydia Pan from CT Wild Ones. This guided walk will highlight the changes in the landscape due to sea level rise and the impact of invasive species. Discover the crucial role of coastal habitats in supporting migrating insects and birds and learn about Avalonia’s management plan for the preserve. Space for this hike is limited, please register here.
Sunday, September 15, Avalonia will host a stewardship and trail walk at Glemboski-Ous Preserve in Bozrah and Montville from 9 a.m. to noon. The walk will traverse old logging roads, follow the winding Trading Cove Brook , and pass through rocky ledges and outcrops. Volunteers will assist Avalonia’s stewardship team in posting preserve boundaries, light trail maintenance and trail marking. This is an opportunity to learn about the basics of preserve stewardship while enjoying a walk through this beautiful preserve. Volunteers are asked to bring gloves, sturdy footwear, drinking water, and bug spray.
Please register here.
On Monday, September 16, from 6:00-7:30pm, members of the community are invited to help with an owl box building project at First Congregational Church. 81 East Town St. Norwich, CT. This is a Gold Award Project created by Katelyn Jacubowski of Girl Scout Troop 63227 in Norwich. The goal is to construct 20 screech owl boxes and place them on Avalonia properties. Screech owls help to control the rodent population and play an important role in the local ecosystem.
