Avalonia Land Conservancy Announces Spring Events
From a hike highlighting the geology of southeast Connecticut to stewardship opportunities in the woods, Avalonia Land Conservancy is hosting a variety of events in May and June.
On Saturday, May 3, Avalonia stewardship staff members and volunteers will be at Hunter Brook Preserve in Norwich from 9 a.m. to noon. This will be the second phase of a wildlife habitat enhancement project. Participants will learn about invasive plant identification, management practices, and planting techniques.
Avalonia and the Sustainability Team of Preston will sponsor another stewardship event from 9 a.m. to noon May 10 at Reed Memorial Woodlands and Mitchell Preserve in North Stonington. Participants will help to cut back overgrowth and re-blaze sections of the trails.
Avalonia will host “Rocky Road: A Geological Exploration of Pine Swamp Preserve in Ledyard” from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on May 10. Geologist Mary Diacomi-Cohen will discuss the geologic history of the area and lead participants on a hands-on exploration of the preserve.
On May 17, Avalonia will have a booth at Earthfest CT at McCook Park in East Lyme. This annual event, sponsored by Earth Day Every Day CT, features music, food, and kids’ activities.
On Sunday, June 8, naturalist Bruce Fellman will lead a “Greet-the-Morning Hike” at Tefftweald at Birchenturn Preserve in North Stonington from 10 a.m. to noon as part of “Trails Day, a national celebration of hiking. After strolling along Wyassup Brook and through upland forest and meadows, participants are invited to share a verse at the Poet’s Bench.
