Artist Sergey Stepanenko to celebrate 70th Birthday with solo exhibition at SPAG Studios

Local artist Sergey Stepanenko will celebrate his 70th birthday with a two-day solo exhibition showcasing decades of work at SPAG Studios.

The exhibition, scheduled for April 11 from 6 to 9 p.m. and April 12 from noon to 4 p.m., will feature approximately 80 paintings created over the past 10 years. The show offers collectors and art enthusiasts a comprehensive look at the evolution of Stepanenko’s work.

Based in Darien, Stepanenko has been a fixture in the Fairfield County arts community since moving to the United States in 1995. He quickly gained recognition after selling out his first local exhibition at Noroton Gallery, building a loyal following whose collections now span the region and beyond.

Stepanenko is known for his expressive palette knife technique, creating paintings that emphasize emotion over fine detail. His “Homage” series reimagines classical masterworks through a contemporary lens, blending color, light, and movement while maintaining the essence of the originals. In contrast, his “Traveling” series draws inspiration from European cities, capturing their architecture, history, and atmosphere.

“I don’t paint details — I paint emotions,” Stepanenko said. “It’s about the feeling of a place, the memory, the energy it leaves with you.”

Born in Barnaul, Stepanenko received formal training in fine art and design in Kyrgyzstan and Russia before beginning a multidisciplinary career that includes murals, large-scale installations, and commissioned works. His art has been featured in private collections worldwide, as well as in luxury residences and aboard cruise lines including Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean.

Organizers say the exhibition not only marks a personal milestone for the artist but also highlights the continued strength of the local arts scene in Norwalk and the role of organizations like SPAG in supporting creative communities across the region.
