Shannon’s Fall Fine Art Auction on October 29 to feature American, Modern, and European paintings

Oil on canvas painting attributed to Alfred Jacob Miller (American, 1810-1874), titled Green River (1851), 27in x 34in. Estimate: $200,000-$300,000

Shannon’s Fine Art Auctioneers will hold its annual Fall Fine Art Auction on Thursday, Oct. 29, at 6 p.m. Eastern Time. The sale will feature more than 200 lots of American art, Modern art and European paintings.

A painting attributed to Alfred Jacob Miller, titled Green River, leads the auction. Painted in 1851, the work depicts a rendezvous of Native Americans, fur traders, and pioneers. Miller first traveled to the Rocky Mountains in 1837 and made field sketches that he used for later studio compositions. At least three other versions of the composition are in museum collections, and the painting is estimated at $200,000 to $300,000.

Willard Leroy Metcalf’s Spring at Leete’s Island, a large-scale view of the Connecticut coast along Long Island Sound, will be offered at auction for the first time. It has been in a private collection since 1985, with documented provenance back to the artist. Metcalf spent many summers on the Connecticut shoreline, most famously with Florence Griswold at her inn in Old Lyme. The painting is estimated at $150,000 to $250,000.

Wifredo Lam’s Personnage N. 1 will also be offered, with an estimate of $150,000 to $250,000. Shannon’s sold Lam’s Personnage N. 2 in the spring of 2025 for $266,700, including buyer’s premium. Painted the year after Lam met Picasso, both works show the influence of Picasso, Surrealism, and African art. They were collected together in Italy and descended in a family collection.

Other highlights include Henry Koerner’s The Bride, a 1950 composition estimated at $100,000 to $150,000 that will also be offered for the first time. Eastman Johnson’s Pig-a-Back, painted in 1866, leads the 19th-century American paintings. Works by Rackstraw Downes, Laurence A. Campbell, Irving Ramsay Wiles, William Trost Richards, John Steuart Curry and Carl Holsoe are included as well. A selection of circus paintings is a unique theme in this sale.

Other artists featured in the auction include Luigi Lucioni, Bob Ross, Emile Albert Gruppe, Winslow Homer, Jane Peterson, Carrie Mae Weems and Aaron Douglas. A portfolio of works by Fidelia Bridges will also be prominently featured.

A public preview is being held at Shannon’s gallery through Oct. 28. Preview hours on weekdays are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern Time.

Shannon’s Fine Art Auctioneers is based in Milford.
