The Limón Dance Company will bring its 80th anniversary commission to two Connecticut stages in February. Choreographer Akram Khan has reimagined José Limón’s The Moor’s Pavane. The company will perform it Feb. 3, 2027, at the Quick Center for the Arts in Fairfield and Feb. 6, 2027, at Onstage at Connecticut College in New London.

Khan is re-envisioning a one-act version of Limón’s work, which was first performed in 1949 at the American Dance Festival. The piece was developed over ten weeks in the fall of 2026 and January 2027. It is the company’s largest choreographic commission to date. Limón’s original distills the story of Shakespeare’s Othello into four characters and a handkerchief, and Khan’s version looks at its themes of race, power and jealousy through a contemporary lens.

“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to be inspired again and now to reimagine this work through my current artistic lens,” Khan said. He said his aim is not to take away from Limón’s original but to pay homage to a work that has inspired artists over many generations.

Khan leads a creative team that includes composer Aditya Prakash, lighting designer Zeynep Kepekli, and costume designers Harriet Jung and Reid Bartelme. Khan is a two-time Laurence Olivier Award winner who created a section of the London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. His reimagined Giselle for English National Ballet is among his best-known works.

Tickets for the Connecticut performances are available through the Quick Center for the Arts and Onstage at Connecticut College. The company’s website, limon.nyc, has more information.

The company was founded in 1946 by José Limón and Doris Humphrey and is considered one of the world’s greatest dance companies. Dante Puleio has served as artistic director since 2020. During his tenure, the company has presented six world premieres and ten reconstructions of iconic dances. It also won its first Bessie Award in twenty years.
