New Richard Long installation opens at Yale Center for British Art on Nov. 4

Richard Long Portrait:,EVERYTHING AT ONCE Installation.,Presented by Lisson Gallery and The Vinyl Factory at the Store Studios, 180 The Strand.,London, 5 October – 10 December 2017,

The Yale Center for British Art in New Haven has commissioned artist Richard Long to create a site-specific installation for its Entrance Court. Titled Gravity, the work will be on view from Nov. 4, 2026, through July 11, 2027. It begins a year of programming marking the museum’s 50th anniversary in 2027.

For the piece, Long uses his hands to sweep clay across a freestanding wall that measures 26 feet wide by 10 feet tall. The composition is meant to set up a dialogue with the steel surfaces of the Louis I. Kahn–designed museum building. The installation is visible from the street and welcomes visitors into the museum.

Gravity also serves as a prologue to two landscape-focused exhibitions on view in the galleries, John Constable: The Landscape Reimagined and Sightlines: British Landscape Photography, 1840 to Now. “Created at the very threshold of the museum, Richard Long’s poetic installation literally brings the earth into our Entrance Court,” said Martina Droth, the Paul Mellon Director of the museum. She said the work invites visitors to think about landscape in new ways and connects with Constable’s vision of a rural England during a time of profound change.

The commission is the first in a new series of contemporary art installations for the Entrance Court, made possible by a multiyear grant from the Bukhman Foundation. The initiative will bring two installations to the space each year. The grant also supports interpretive materials and free youth, public, and community programs.

This is Long’s third collaboration with the museum. In 2022, he installed Quantock Wood Circle in the Library Court, and in 1984 he created three site-specific works for The Critical Eye/I, the first contemporary art exhibition held at the museum.

Long has been a leading figure in British conceptual art since his 1967 work A Line Made by Walking. He treats walking, movement and natural materials as artistic media, and he began making his mud works in the 1980s, applying wet mud directly to walls and floors without brushes or conventional tools. His honors include the Turner Prize in 1989 and Japan’s Praemium Imperiale for sculpture in 2009, and he was knighted in 2018. Born in Bristol in 1945, he works between London and Bristol.
