The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum in Norwalk has won an award from the Connecticut League of Museums for its exhibition “Bulls of Wall Street: High Finance, Power, and Social Change in Victorian America.” The museum will receive the honor at a ceremony on Oct. 27.

The event runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the New Britain Museum of American Art. Museum Chairman of the Board Douglas Hempstead and Executive Director Susan Gilgore said in a joint statement that they are grateful to the League for recognizing the exhibition. They said the goal was to offer a thought-provoking perspective on early American finance and that the exhibit resonated with the community.

Gilgore conceived and led “Bulls of Wall Street,” and Museum Consultant Stacey Danielson curated it. The exhibition featured rare and never-before-seen period artifacts, photos, documents and costumes from public and private collections. It explored the financial world of LeGrand Lockwood, a leading figure in 19th-century American finance, and his peers Vanderbilt and Gould.

The exhibition also looked at trailblazing women such as Victoria Woodhull and Hetty Green. It featured individuals from marginalized communities as well, including Jeremiah Hamilton, the first Black millionaire in America, who tried to break Wall Street’s “glass ceiling” in the 19th century. CT Humanities sponsored both the research and implementation phases of the project. Additional support came from Tim and Sheila Pettee, museum Trustee Kathy Olsen, CPA, and Dr. Michele and Attorney Miklos Koleszar.

Hempstead and Gilgore also thanked the museum’s curators, volunteers, staff, supporters and lenders for helping bring the project to completion. The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum is a National Historic Landmark.

The Connecticut League of Museums works to strengthen the state’s museums and cultural resources and expand their community impact. Founded in 1950, it supports member museums, historical societies, libraries, and other cultural heritage institutions through professional development, networking, workshops and training, and an annual conference and awards program. The League also runs Connecticut Collections, an open-source collections management system and online portal that makes the state’s museum and archival collections accessible to researchers worldwide.
