East Hartford Police and Health Department host Drug Take Back Day October 24

The East Hartford Police Department and the East Hartford Health and Human Services Department will host the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Take Back Day on Saturday, October 24, 2026. The collection event takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the East Hartford Public Safety Complex, located at 31 School Street.

Residents can drop off unwanted, unused, or expired prescription medications in solid forms, including pills, tablets, and capsules. Officials will not accept liquids, intravenous solutions, gels, ointments, patches, syringes, sharps, or illegal drugs during the event.

Health and Human Services staff will be on site to provide free Deterra medication disposal kits while supplies last. Department representatives will also share information about naloxone, an opioid overdose reversal medication commonly known as Narcan.

The initiative aims to prevent prescription drug abuse and accidental poisonings by removing unused medications from home cabinets. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows statewide unintentional overdose deaths dropped from an estimated 1,337 in 2023 to 986 in 2024.

Nationally, the DEA collected roughly 642,410 pounds of unwanted drugs during its April event, bringing the total collected over the program’s 10-year span to more than 21 million pounds. The collection in East Hartford forms part of ongoing municipal efforts to reduce addiction and prevent overdose incidents.
