Steep Rock Association and Roxbury Land Trust partner for 4-mile inter-town hike

Steep Rock Association and Roxbury Land Trust will host a 4-mile inter-town hike along Tunnel Road in Washington Depot on Sept. 26, 2026. The guided walk takes place from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and connects protected lands across western Connecticut.

Rory Larson, Director of Conservation for Steep Rock Association, and Jamie Curren, Land and Property Manager for Roxbury Land Trust, will lead the event. Both guides are Roxbury natives who steward the land and will share details regarding the history and natural features of the area.

The route follows a partially closed town road alongside the Shepaug River, leading into core forests and passing the old Shepaug Valley Railroad bed. Hikers will take two brief detours to explore Roxbury Land Trust’s Battle Swamp Brook Preserve and the 235-foot bedrock passage in Steep Rock Preserve.

Participants will meet at the main parking lot of Steep Rock Preserve, located at 2 Tunnel Road in Washington Depot. Upon reaching Battle Swamp Brook Preserve on Judd’s Bridge Road in Roxbury, a shuttle bus will transport hikers back to the starting point.

The event is open to all ages, though organizers advise wearing sturdy footwear and bringing water for the moderately difficult walk. Online registration is required in advance due to limited space on the return shuttle.
