Bridgeport Public Library launches free toy lending program for local families

The Bridgeport Public Library expanded its community offerings on Thursday with the launch of a new Toy Library at the Burroughs-Saden Main Library. Families can now check out board games, building blocks, race cars, action figures, and other play materials for free using a library card.

The collection is designed to encourage children to imagine, create, problem-solve, and play without any cost to families. It aims to make play resources more accessible while giving young visitors the opportunity to discover something new with each visit.

City Librarian Elaine Braithwaite noted that the library has always served as a place for discovery, which now extends to toys that inspire imagination and play. She added that the program gives children the excitement of choosing items to bring home while helping the library foster fun and creative experiences.

The initiative was made possible through a $5,000 donation from Traveling Toys, along with support from donors Jean and Bruce Weiner. Traveling Toys partnered directly with the library system to bring the program to life.

The program officially debuted Thursday at the Burroughs-Saden Main Library with a special launch event and story time for attending families. The Toy Library collection is scheduled to debut at the North Branch Library next week.

Adult cardholders may borrow up to two items at a time for a seven-day loan period, with up to two renewals permitted.
