Fairfield University engineering students partner with Bridgeport manufacturer to modernize operations

Engineering students from Fairfield University’s School of Engineering and Computing teamed up with Bridgeport-based Calzone Case Company to modernize the business’s operational systems. The collaboration was formed through a partnership involving the university, the Bridgeport Regional Business Council, and the Southwest Connecticut Manufacturing Partnership.

The initiative was carried out through Fairfield Engineering’s senior design project course, where students addressed real-world challenges surrounding the manufacturer’s bill of materials system. Phuc Nguyen, Maureen VonHassel, and Matthew Grohs worked on the project during the 2024-25 academic year.

Work on the system continued into the following year with students Nicole Reagan, Alyssa Watral, and Ryan Lindley. Their combined efforts resulted in improved operational efficiency for the local manufacturer.

The academic partnership also created a direct employment pipeline for project participants. Following his work on the project, Nguyen was hired as an assistant engineer at Calzone Case Company.

Collaborations like this project offer regional manufacturing companies access to technical expertise and updated systems management. In turn, participating engineering students gain hands-on professional experience managing complex client projects prior to graduation.
