Yale Center for British Art brings rare Constable works to New Haven

The Yale Center for British Art will present a major exhibition dedicated to British landscape painter John Constable beginning September 3, 2026. Titled John Constable: The Landscape Reimagined, the display marks the 250th anniversary of the artist’s birth and runs through July 25, 2027.

The exhibition features Constable’s open-air paintings, outdoor plein air sketches, and detailed cloud studies. The collection also includes two of his famous six-foot canvases, highlighted by his piece Hadleigh Castle.

Several works featured in the presentation will be on public display in the United States for the first time. Among these debuting pieces is a recently acquired study of Hampstead Heath joining the museum’s collection.

The Yale Center for British Art currently holds the largest collection of Constable’s artwork outside of the United Kingdom. Alongside his paintings, the display incorporates drawings, engravings, and works by contemporaries such as John Linnell and Richard Parkes Bonington to showcase his development across multiple artistic media.

The Constable exhibition will run concurrently with Sightlines: British Landscape Photography, 1840 to Now, which remains on view at the New Haven museum from July 23, 2026, through January 24, 2027.
