Stamford historic cinema breaks ground on major Avon Recreated renovation project

Mayor Caroline Simmons, Avon leaders and project partners break ground as Executive Director Peter H. Gistelinck holds the “Take 1!” clapperboard, launching the Avon’s next chapter.

Community leaders, elected officials, and supporters gathered in Stamford to celebrate the official groundbreaking of the Avon Recreated project. The initiative marks a major redevelopment for the 87-year-old Avon Theatre – Deborah & Chuck Royce Cinema Arts Center.

The project involves restoring the main historic building alongside constructing new facility infrastructure. Plans for the updated complex include three screening venues, a third theater focused on educational programs, a dedicated classroom, and a cafe with a wine bar.

Technological updates across the facility will feature 4K HDR BARCO laser projection systems and Dolby Atmos sound in the main auditorium. The design also incorporates stadium-style luxury seating and enlarged lobby gathering areas.

Accessibility improvements will be integrated throughout the venue, including enhanced entrances, an elevator, updated restrooms, and specialized patron amenities.

Construction work is slated for completion in September 2027, with the facility expecting to host a grand reopening in late October 2027. While the downtown Stamford location is closed during construction, the nonprofit will continue showing films and hosting events at regional partner venues through its off-site initiative, Avon on Tour.
