Danbury Railway Museum hosts annual celebration honoring famous postal dog Owney

The Danbury Railway Museum will host a special event on Saturday, July 11, to honor the history of Owney, the famous Railway Post Office dog. The celebration will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the museum premises located at 120 White Street. Admission is $20 for all visitors aged 3 and older.
The admission price includes a train ride, a complimentary Owney postcard and stamp, a dog treat, and a meal consisting of a hot dog, chips, and a drink. Trains are scheduled to depart hourly at 11:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m., and 2:00 p.m.
Owney was a stray dog adopted by Railway Mail Service clerks in Albany, New York, in 1888. He traveled across the country in mail cars and eventually went around the world as an official emissary in 1895. The U.S. Postal Service honored the mascot with a postage stamp in 2011, and his preserved likeness remains on display at the National Postal Museum in Washington, D.C.

During the scheduled train rides, a docent will read from a 1930s book detailing Owney’s true story. Reprints of the book will be available for purchase at the front desk. Children can also participate in an event-themed scavenger hunt called the Hunt for Owney.
Visitors will have the opportunity to tour a fully restored 1910 Pennsylvania Railroad Railway Post Office car. Inside the car, a U.S. Postal Service clerk will offer a one-day-only collectible pictorial postmark. Children can have their postcards stamped and cancelled by the clerk to take home or send out through the regular mail.
The train ride, known as the Railyard Local, features a 1920s passenger coach or a caboose pulled by a vintage locomotive. The route passes through the historic rail yard, which contains more than 70 vintage railroad cars and a 1907 steam locomotive. The trip includes a turn on the historic turntable, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and a tour of a steam-era water tower pump house.
The interior exhibits inside the restored 1903 Danbury station will be open to guests throughout the day. The museum’s operating model train layouts will also be running. Visitors can browse the fully stocked gift shop located inside the station building.
