Eight Guinea hog piglets make public debut at Connecticut Beardsley Zoo

Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo has introduced a newly born litter of eight Guinea hog piglets to the public. The piglets, consisting of four males and four females, were born on June 13 at the facility. Visitors can observe the active and healthy young animals as they begin exploring the outdoor surroundings inside the zoo farmyard.

The newborn piglets arrived with their eyes open and were able to walk shortly after birth. The family group includes the mother, Ethel, and the father, Harry Plopper, who are caring for the offspring together. The public viewing coincides with the upcoming Father’s Day weekend schedule at the Bridgeport attraction.

Guinea hogs are categorized as a threatened domestic heritage breed by the Livestock Conservancy. According to zoo chief executive officer Dr. Jim Wharton, the arrival of the litter helps illustrate the institutional importance of preserving rare domestic animal lines for future generations. The young animals will remain on regular public display as part of the standard farmyard exhibits.

Domesticated Guinea hogs are typically smaller than their historical wild counterparts and frequently feature black hair. The animals grow to an average height of 21 to 24 inches and generally weigh between 150 and 300 pounds. The breed is characterized by a square body structure, an advanced sense of taste, substantial memory retention capabilities, and a quick learning capacity.

The animals function as hardy grazers and foragers that use taste to identify local objects. Their standard diet consists of varying materials, including roots, tubers, weeds, shrubs, grasshoppers, mice, snakes, and bird eggs. The new additions are currently interacting with visitors from their dedicated enclosure space at the facility.
