Downtown New Haven announces summer event lineup featuring outdoor movies, markets, and festivals

Downtown New Haven is transforming its parks, plazas, and streets into community gathering spaces for a series of events running throughout the summer season. The upcoming schedule includes cultural celebrations, outdoor movie screenings, public sports viewings, and local markets across multiple downtown locations.

This week, the city will debut public World Cup screenings in Pitkin Plaza starting Thursday, June 11, at 3:00 p.m. Daily screenings will run through July 19, organized in partnership with Trinity Bar & Restaurant, which will also show the games indoors. A special pop-up event with the New Haven Football Club is scheduled for June 19, featuring merchandise, ticket raffles, and target shooting. Nearby businesses, including Tacos Los Gordos and Blue Orchid, are offering takeout dining promotions for spectators.

Outdoor movie screenings will take place every Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. in the plaza through October. This week, the series features a screening of The Birdcage in celebration of Pride Month. Future screenings will also mark Juneteenth. Attendees can bring takeout food from local establishments to the free outdoor viewings, which are also supported by Trinity Bar & Restaurant.

Bi-monthly summer markets are launching on the Upper Green, at the corner of Chapel and College streets. Operating in partnership with The Proprietors of the New Haven Green and the City’s Economic Development Association, the markets run from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. beginning Sunday, June 14. The events feature Connecticut cottage food vendors, artisans, yoga classes, games, and a picnic blanket library.

The first ever Juneteenth Festival & Market is scheduled for Friday, June 19, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Temple Plaza. The all-ages event features Black artist and artisan vendors, live music, line dancing, lawn games, and flash tattoos provided by local Black-owned shop 24HR Ink.

Salsa in Ninth Square will also return to the Orange Street Promenade twice a month on Thursdays. The next session takes place Thursday, June 11, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The evening includes free beginner salsa lessons for the first 45 minutes, followed by open social dancing music provided by DJ Christie. The dance series is sponsored by Beacon Communities/Ninth Square.

Additionally, the Flights of Fancy: Summer Sips wine, food, and shopping crawl is set to return on July 16, featuring select Broadway Shops. Tickets for the crawl go on sale next week. The event is partnering with the local nonprofit New Reach, giving attendees an option to donate for a chance to win a 250-dollar gift card to The Wine Thief.
