Lyman Allyn Art Museum exhibition surveys the bold works of Shepard Fairey

The Lyman Allyn Art Museum will host a retrospective exhibition examining three decades of work by American street artist Shepard Fairey. The show, titled “Shepard Fairey: Facing The Giant, Three Decades of Dissent,” opens on June 6 and runs through September 6.
The exhibition features 32 works tracing Fairey’s visual development and social commentary from 1989 through 2019. The selection contains 30 hand-painted multiples, which consist of prints on unique collaged backgrounds accented with stenciling and embellishments. Two additional prints from the museum’s permanent collection complete the display. The artwork ranges from early graphics influenced by punk rock and skate culture to later pieces centering on social justice, environmental sustainability, and political engagement.
The exhibition title references the prominent figure in Fairey’s long-running Obey Giant campaign. While studying at the Rhode Island School of Design in 1989, Fairey launched a sticker campaign named “Andre the Giant Has a Posse,” which eventually transformed into the global Obey Giant series. Pedro Alonzo, an independent contemporary art curator, collaborated with Fairey to select the featured pieces. Landau Traveling Exhibitions organized the traveling show in association with Obey Giant Art.

This public art display runs from May 30 to July 12 across three New London venues: The Annex, the Dutch Tavern, and the Oasis Pub.
- Documentary Screening: A free public screening of the 2017 documentary “Obey Giant,” which covers Fairey’s career and personal life, will take place on Wednesday, July 22, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the museum. Attendees must submit an RSVP via telephone or email.
