Lyme Art Association issues call for entries for Connecticut history exhibition

The Lyme Art Association has announced a call for artists for an upcoming exhibition titled “A Connecticut History,” scheduled to run from June 5 through July 17. The show is timed to coincide with this summer’s commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The association is seeking landscapes, portraits, still lifes, and sculptures that relate to the history, stories, and identity of the state.

The deadline for artists to submit their work is midnight on Friday, May 8. While all Lyme Art Association member artists are welcome to enter, the association noted that artists do not need to be Connecticut residents to participate. The theme is described as intentionally broad, inviting entries that range from direct historical representations of the Revolutionary era to contemporary reinterpretations of the state’s evolving identity.

According to the exhibition’s theme description, the gallery is looking for works that engage with Connecticut’s Indigenous roots, its built environment, and its maritime and agricultural heritage. Suggested subjects include coastlines, stone walls, streetscapes, and portraits of both historical figures and contemporary residents. The show aims to feature work that honors tradition or reflects on how people live and connect in the state today.

The exhibition will be hosted at the association’s galleries located at 90 Lyme Street in Old Lyme. Submissions are expected to explore a variety of personal connections and cultural references, including Connecticut’s industry and the arts. The association encourages artists to think expansively about the state’s history, whether through capturing natural beauty or exploring modern contexts.
