City Gallery to feature encaustic and assemblage works by Amy Arledge

Artist Amy Arledge will return to City Gallery this May for a solo exhibition titled “ECLECTIC,” featuring a multifaceted collection of encaustic and assemblage works. The show is scheduled to run from May 1 through May 31, with an opening reception hosted on Saturday, May 2, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Arledge’s work is deeply rooted in the natural world, which serves as a consistent theme throughout her various mediums. “Nature is an endless source of fascination and inspiration for me,” Arledge said. “It is a common thread in all of my work, whether through actual depiction or in abstract shapes and colors.”

The exhibition highlights Arledge’s use of encaustic, an ancient technique involving a mixture of purified beeswax and damar resin. Derived from the Greek word enkaustikos, meaning “to burn in,” the medium was utilized in Ancient Greece and Egypt for both art and construction. In addition to her wax-based paintings of landscapes and seascapes, Arledge will display assemblages created from found objects, such as wood, which she enhances with color and wax to develop unique personalities.

Arledge’s career includes participation in numerous solo and group exhibitions at venues such as Artspace in New Haven, the Slater Museum in Norwich, and the Yale Medical Library. The exhibition and its opening reception are free and open to the public at City Gallery, located at 994 State Street. Regular gallery hours are Friday through Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., or by appointment.
