“Obviously, we’re at the beginning of something / I don’t expect you to know how it’s gonna go, / But I believe we might be onto something, / And I just thought maybe you should know.”

On Friday, April 10th, New England’s own Lake Street Dive took the stage at Mohegan Sun Arena, unknowingly playing to one of their largest crowds to date. The genre-bending multi-instrumentalists are touring off the success of their 2024 album, “Good Together,” which explores the intricacies and truths of their lives in a vibrant, inventive, and authentic manner. After a jazzy opening from opener Carrtoons, Lake Street Dive opened with an honest, nearly accapella “Hypotheticals,” a hit track from their 2021 album Obviously, pulling the massive room into something that felt surprisingly intimate.

From the very first note, Rachael Price commanded attention. Her voice didn’t just carry, it filled the arena, rich and resonant with a control that made even the most difficult runs feel effortless. Whether leaning into the groove of “Better Than” or opening up emotionally on “Twenty-Five,” she delivered each song with a balance of precision and soul that left the audience visibly in awe. It’s the kind of voice that feels just as powerful in restraint as it does at full volume, and throughout the night, she moved seamlessly between the two.

The band’s covers became some of the most memorable moments of the set, especially during an acoustic turn where the members gathered at the very front of the stage, stepping out from behind their instruments to perform more intimately together. In that moment, their musicianship felt even more apparent; stripped back, collaborative, and rooted in pure talent rather than production. Their take on “I Want You Back” was reworked with their signature looseness and groove, while “Linger,” my personal favorite, felt soft and understated, giving space for a more delicate, emotional delivery. Later, their encore performance of “Rich Girl” turned the arena into a full sing-along, closing the night on a high that felt both joyful and communal.

What made the night feel especially memorable, though, was the band’s connection with the audience. Between songs, their easy, conversational banter dissolved any sense of distance, making the arena feel more like a shared space than a stage and crowd. That energy carried outward throughout the floor. People danced in pairs or small groups, spinning and swaying with a kind of nostalgic, communal joy that I found reminiscent of the communal energy of the rallies during the 1970s peace movement. In a time where so much feels uncertain or heavy, Lake Street Dive created something rare: a space rooted in release, happiness, and freedom, where for a few hours, nothing else seemed to matter.

What makes Lake Street Dive so compelling live is the way each member brings a distinct musical style while still feeling completely in sync. The arrangements are rooted in jazz but stretch easily into pop and soul, with tight rhythms, fluid instrumentation, and just enough spontaneity to keep things exciting. There’s a clear sense of trust on stage, moments of eye contact, subtle cues, and an ease that allows them to shift from stripped-down vulnerability on songs like “Baby, Don’t Leave Me Alone With My Thoughts” to the infectious energy of “You Go Down Smooth” without missing a beat.

By the end of the night, Lake Street Dive had built something that felt genuinely connective; driven by their musicianship, onstage chemistry, and the shared energy of the crowd. From start to finish, that sense of joy and community never wavered. If you are seeking a space that echoes that same loving community, a Lake Street Dive show is the way to go. Lucky for you, this night marked the beginning of their 2026 North American tour, so be sure to catch them on the road now through September 2026.
