Lyman Allyn Art Museum director Sam Quigley to retire after 12 years

The Lyman Allyn Art Museum has announced that Director Sam Quigley will retire in early summer 2026, ending a 12-year tenure marked by a revitalization of the institution and its community engagement.
The Museum Board of Trustees has initiated a national search for a successor, engaging the executive search firm Museum Search & Reference to identify a new leader to build upon Quigley’s work.
“While this moment is bittersweet, it is also one filled with gratitude for Sam’s leadership, his vision, and the indelible mark he leaves on this institution and its community,” Board President Liza Sharp said. “During his tenure, he led a complete revitalization of the Museum, guiding it into a more dynamic, welcoming, and forward-looking institution.”

Quigley’s time at the museum saw several key curatorial and structural developments. He oversaw the creation of the Near :: New gallery, a platform for regional artists, and the launch of the Louis Comfort Tiffany in New London exhibition. He also directed the reimagining of the museum’s permanent collection through the American Perspectives exhibition, which focuses on American art through a local lens.
The museum’s permanent collection grew significantly under Quigley’s guidance through strategic acquisitions and gifts, including works by John Singer Sargent, Louis Comfort Tiffany, David Driskell, and Jacob Lawrence.
Beyond the galleries, Quigley championed the launch of Lyman Allyn Park, a project designed to integrate art and nature while creating a more inclusive public space.
Reflecting on his decade-plus of service, Quigley credited the museum’s supporters and staff for the institution’s growth.
“I am deeply proud of what we have accomplished together—expanding access, strengthening our collections, and creating meaningful experiences for our audiences,” Quigley said.
The board indicated that transition plans and opportunities to celebrate Quigley’s contributions will be shared in the coming months.
