Litchfield Historical Society to debut Revolutionary War exhibits

The Litchfield Historical Society will open two new exhibitions this month commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, local officials announced.
The exhibitions, “Legends and Lore: Reconsidering Perspectives of the American Revolution” and “One People: Portraits of the Early Republic,” seek to provide a contemporary look at the region’s Revolutionary War history.
“Legends and Lore” examines well-known local accounts, including the melting of a King George III statue and the imprisonment of William Franklin, the Loyalist son of Benjamin Franklin. The exhibit uses archival records to compare historical reality with nostalgic retellings of the era.

“One People” focuses on the individuals who shaped the early United States, featuring portraits of prominent figures such as George Washington’s spymaster, Benjamin Tallmadge, alongside stories of influential citizens whose likenesses were never recorded.

The collection includes a rare 1830s print of the Declaration of Independence on loan from a private collection.
A public opening reception is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, April 17, at the Litchfield History Museum. The museum and the Tapping Reeve House and Litchfield Law School will officially reopen for the season on April 18.
Admission to the society’s museums is free to the public through the support of Arthur J. Gallagher Risk Management Services LLC.
The Litchfield Historical Society is located at 7 South Street, Litchfield, CT.
