Museum of Connecticut History to honor WWI canine hero Sgt. Stubby

The Museum of Connecticut History will unveil a life-sized reproduction of Sergeant Stubby, the most decorated war dog in American history, during a ceremony on April 20.
The event, scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Connecticut State Library, marks the anniversary of the Battle of Seicheprey, the 1918 engagement where the canine hero was wounded by a hand grenade while serving with the 102nd Infantry Regiment.
Stubby, a stray found in New Haven in 1917, was adopted by Cpl. J. Robert Conroy while the regiment trained at Yale University. After being smuggled to France, the dog participated in 17 battles, survived mustard gas attacks, and once helped capture a German spy. His actions earned him the rank of sergeant, making him the only dog in U.S. history to receive such a promotion.

The new figure was commissioned from David Hayes Studio to help illustrate the state’s contributions to World War I. Curt Deane, the grandson of Stubby’s owner, is among those scheduled to speak at the unveiling.
In conjunction with the ceremony, the State Library is offering a half-price sale on “Connecticut Fights,” the official history of the 102nd Regiment. The limited-edition volume, which includes an introduction by former State Historian Walter Woodward, will be available for $75.
The museum, located at 231 Capitol Ave., will offer free admission for the ceremony. No prior registration is required for the public to attend.
