New Haven’s City Gallery to host Catherine Lavoie fiber art exhibition

Fiber artist Catherine Lavoie will debut a new solo exhibition, “Threads: Stories in Fiber,” at City Gallery this month, featuring a collection of mixed-media works that blend traditional quilting with found-object assemblage.

The exhibit, which runs through April 26, is dedicated to the artist’s mother, Helen Rita Pasternak Lavoie, in honor of her 100th birthday.

Lavoie’s work utilizes repurposed materials, including discarded wedding dresses, vintage doilies, and modern power cords, to explore themes of trauma recovery, family roots, and Buddhist philosophy. A practicing psychotherapist, Lavoie said her professional background informs her interest in the human narrative and the transformative power of art.

“The surprise of recognizing these everyday items in an artistic context is a key component of my work,” Lavoie said. “The pieces are designed to tell stories in new and reassembled ways.”

The exhibition includes a variety of mediums such as soft sculpture, installation art, and modern wall quilts. Lavoie is a member of City Gallery and the Kent Art Association.

The gallery will host an opening reception and artist talk at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 11. Additionally, writer Jen Payne will perform a poetry reading from her memoir, “Sleeping with Ghosts,” at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 19. Payne’s literary work, which has appeared in the Connecticut Literary Anthology and Yale’s “The Perch,” focuses on the intersection of memory, nature, and spirituality.

City Gallery is located at 994 State St. Admission to the exhibit and the scheduled events is free and open to the public. The gallery is open Friday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
