The Kate to host Venice-themed photo exhibit and reception featuring Sonny Whelen

The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center will host “Return to Venice: Celebrating the Photography of Sonny Whelen” on Tuesday, May 26, featuring a digital exhibit and a screening of a classic Hepburn film.

The event, scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m., includes a digital photography exhibit displayed on the theater’s large screen accompanied by a reception featuring Venetian-inspired food and wine. Following the exhibit, the center will screen Hepburn’s 1955 film “Summertime” at 7 p.m.

Whelen, a trustee and former board chairman of “the Kate,” recently traveled to Venice to capture the locations featured in the film. “Venice is a spectacular city that captured my heart and imagination,” Whelen said in a statement regarding the collection.

In the 1955 romantic drama, Hepburn portrays Jane Hudson, an American woman whose vacation in Venice leads to a bittersweet romance.

Whelen is the retired executive vice president of Whelen Engineering and a former professional race car driver who earned two national championships with Whelen Motorsports. In addition to his work with the cultural arts center, he serves on the board of directors for The Michael J. Fox Foundation.

A selection of prints from the exhibit will be available for purchase. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Katharine Hepburn Museum collections and the center’s various education programs.
