Connecticut Agriculture Week celebrates state’s farms and $4 billion industry

State officials and agricultural organizations are celebrating Connecticut Agriculture Week from March 15–21, highlighting the impact of farming on the state’s economy and encouraging residents to support local farms and producers.

Organized by the Connecticut Department of Agriculture, the annual observance recognizes the role agriculture plays across the state. According to the department, the industry contributes roughly $4 billion to Connecticut’s economy each year. The state is home to more than 5,000 farm businesses that manage about 370,000 acres of land and provide jobs for nearly 30,000 residents.

“A strong farming community fuels a strong state economy — agriculture feeds our families, supports our food supply, and drives innovation,” Agriculture Commissioner Bryan P. Hurlburt said in a statement. “Connecticut Agriculture Week is a time to celebrate farmers through renewed support of these local businesses.”

The centerpiece event of the week will be Ag Day at the Capitol on Wednesday, March 18, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Connecticut State Capitol. Hosted in partnership with the Connecticut Ag Information Council, the event will feature nearly 50 agricultural organizations showcasing farming activities, nutrition programs, and career opportunities in agriculture.

Farmers, legislators, students, and members of the public are invited to attend. Visitors will have opportunities to sample and take home locally produced items and participate in a ceremony at 10:30 a.m. announcing the 2026 Connecticut Outstanding Young Farmer and honoring other award recipients.

The week also includes a Women in Agriculture panel on March 16, hosted by the Department of Agriculture and the Governor’s Council on Women and Girls. Moderated by Susan Bysiewicz, Connecticut’s lieutenant governor, the discussion will highlight the role women play in the agricultural sector.

Panelists include Amanda Fargo-Johnson of Connecticut RC&D, Dakota Rudloff-Eastman, owner of River Ridge Farm & Market, and Rachel Precious, founder of Precious Oysters Raw Bar Catering. The event will be offered virtually and in person in Hartford.

Later in the week, maple sugar producers across the state will welcome visitors during Connecticut Maple Weekend on March 21–22. More than two dozen sugarhouses statewide will open their doors for tours, product tastings and demonstrations showing how maple sap is turned into syrup and other products.

Officials say the weeklong celebration also serves as a reminder for residents to support local agriculture year-round by purchasing locally grown products, visiting farm stands and markets, attending farm-based events, and participating in community-supported agriculture programs.
